Recognition is a fundamental craving of every human being, we all want to be recognized and appreciated for our contributions to any given cause, and employees are not exempted from this. The benefits of recognizing an employee are numerous. They range from an increase in productivity and better employee engagement to a tension-free and calm work environment. There are several reasons for which an employee can be recognized. However, here are some salient behaviors that really need to be recognized in order to get the productive best from an employee:

1. Adaptability

Organisations should appreciate employees who display an ability to adapt to changing styles and roles and still perform quite efficiently. Adaptability is a rather useful skill, especially for startups or small business that do not have particular areas of specialization. An adaptable employee is one that is not afraid of change or a sudden shift in lanes, when working on a particular project. For example, when working on a project with others and at the very last minute, there is a change in specifics or instructions, an adaptable employee will not shy away from this but will take up the challenge and still perform quite effectively.

Without adaptable employees, a company would be unable to adjust to changing conditions in the market. A good example is Blockbuster which is now extinct, simply because they refused to adapt to the state of the art streaming technology which is the trending method. (Think Netflix). Adaptability is indeed a gem and companies should be able to recognize it and reward it in every employee who displays it.

2. Honesty and integrity

It is always a good thing to be able to trust an employee and it is even better to make them recognize that they are trusted. An employee with integrity is one that an employer can be rest assured, will do the right thing for the business even in their absence and even when it might not benefit him/her personally. It is important to let such employee know that the organisation appreciates and wishes to nurture that trait.

We live in a very competitive world where almost everyone sees the other person as a competition. It is therefore a very valuable skill to have employees who collaborate really well with each other. Teamwork makes work in a company very efficient, it is teamwork when an employee doesn’t see himself as the only Assignment Master, but collaborates with other employees to quickly and efficiently complete tasks in the company. It is important for companies to recognize this trait in employees, by praising them publicly or through gifting . This will encourage other employees to do the same.

4. Willingness to learn and improve

Another trait or behavior that needs to be recognized and appreciated in an employee is the willingness to learn and to improve. An employee who is not discouraged by a seemingly difficult task, but is ready to learn the ropes is a great employee to have. Such employees end up being skilled in several areas, as well as very efficient. Indeed, it is necessary for everyone to be ready to always improve his skills, logical thinking and knowledge. The drive to improve on current efficiency level is very laudable and indeed need to be  appreciated.

It is a good move  to recognize an employee with a strong work ethic. An employee with a great work ethic is a hard worker who ensures that he accomplishes tasks at the proper time and very efficiently. Good work ethic ensures that the business keep up with a competitive market. An employee with a good work ethic will find faster ways to complete tasks and will utilize resources to effectively complete tasks.

6. Humility

Humility is a very attractive trait in an employee. In fact, humility is the bedrock for that employee who is a team player and is always ready to learn. Humility among employees allows for smoothness in the running of a company. For example, long before Satya Nadella became a CEO in Microsoft, he was identified as possessing a key quality for a modern, dynamic leader – humility. Thus, recognizing and appreciating humility helps nurture the culture of continous learning and openness in an organisation.

It is important for organisations to appreciate this employee behavior, so as to ensure that such a spark does not die out.

8. Dependability

It is important and prudent to recognize and appreciate an employee who is very dependable. A dependable employee is the one who  can be called upon at any hour and will deliver without failing. A dependable employee does not need supervision and can be put in charge of very sensitive and important assignments. Such employees are those who make the company function, even when the leader or supervisor is absent.

9. Pro-activeness

A proactive employee is a problem solver who acts instead of reacting. A proactive employee analyses the market and makes the best decisions that will keep the company ahead, even before being told to do so. An example of a proactive company is Tesco Mobile which has taken customer service to the next level by reaching out to customers long before they send in their complaints and questions. Employers should learn to spot proactive employees and appreciate them.

Recognition and appreciation of good traits in individuals only inspire more from them. If an employee should display any of the traits we have discussed above, it will be proper for employers to appreciate such traits. People work better when they feel loved and appreciated.
